This 1922 installment entitled "The Cult" was a classic for that era. Cults were becoming a common fad found in inner cities, and with this strip, many of the nation's youth had finally found a comic in which they could relate. It was so widely adored by the public that from July to December, this was the only strip published in the New York Times and Chicago Tribune. Not just "The Cult" line of comic strips, but this single, particular cartoon.
"Kilgore the Butcher," referred to by the boy on the left, was the God of the Harvest at the time. Though there were many cults who worhipped many gods (including "Marzupius the Arsonist" and "Racist Ed"), they all acknowledged Kilgore in one form or another. This belief was the common thread that linked all cults of the early to mid 1920s, until Jesus Christ was invented in 1926.
